Cloth Diapering 101: What are the basic types of cloth diapers?

Cloth diapering can seem like an intimidating process. From prefolds to all-in-ones to covers, all the terms can become overwhelming. Below is a cheat sheet of some common terms and items. So if you are new to cloth diapering or a seasoned veteran, take some time to read over the list and get acquainted with cloth.

Prefolds
Chinese Prefolds: a flat diaper that comes in multiple sizes and absorbencies. You will have to have a cover for these diapers as well as learn how to fold them. Compared to the Indian prefolds, the Chinese have a harder stitching and will most likely outlast the Indian prefolds.

Indian Prefolds: a flat diaper that comes in multiple sizes and absorbencies. These will need a cover and will have to be folded by you. These are unbleached and will wash up quicker than the Chinese prefolds.

Diaper Cover: a cover over the diaper to protect the child's clothes from wetness
Pull-on diaper covers: this is used when the cloth diaper underneath has a closure; if you are using a prefold you will have to purchase pins or Snappis. Pull-ons can be made of nylon, wool, or fleece.

Wrap covers: these are like disposable diapers with Velcro to hold them up.
All-in-Ones: these are diapers that combine a waterproof outside with an absorbent inside. There are several brands but a popular brand is Bumgenius. These are great for daycare and are super convenient.

Contoured Diapers: these have wings which hold the diaper to the baby when fastened with a pin or Snappi. These do not have elastic at legs or the waist. These do require a cover. Kissaluvs is a popular brand.

Fitted Diapers: these have elastic at the legs and waist as well as a closure to hold the diaper onto the baby. These diapers do need a cover. Bumgenius also makes a fitted diaper.

Pocket Diapers: these have a pocket sewn into the diaper in which a pad can be placed inside for absorbency; these do no typically need covers. Bumgenius and Swaddlebees are common brands.

One-size Diapers fit a child from birth to 35 lbs. There are snaps on the front which snap and unsnap to form the different sizes.
